PHARMA PACKAGING DESIGN RESEARCH
AN
INNOVATIVE FIELD FOR PHARMACY GRADUATES
Designing pharmaceutical packaging
is more complex, costly and challenging than ever before. Packaging design is
an example of collaborations between designers, social and market researchers,
and experts in fields like pharmacology, are producing very interesting
results. Packaging design today provides stability and shelf life to the drug
and the delivery system, which becomes fundamental to the safety, convenience
and compliance of drug use. As drug producing sectors upgrade and diversify,
packaging market is also witnessing a rapid growth. The key challenges of
pharmaceutical packaging are the 5Cs - Counterfeit, Compliance, Communication,
Convenience and Cost.
Opportunities for Pharmacy Graduates
are international and there is a high demand for pharmaceutical packagers who
design pharmaceutical packaging for new drugs and dosage forms. Demand for pharmaceutical
packaging is increasing and will continue to do so as companies in the highly
competitive and rapidly changing pharmaceutical market come to rely more on
packaging to protect and promote their products, increase patient compliance,
and meet new regulations. Driven by a strong R&D effort, highly specialized
demands of pharmaceutical packaging arising from increasing product diversity
and new administration forms is coming in front of pharmaceutical packagers. The
increasing demand for biologics will boost the demand for innovative product
packaging solutions in the global pharma packaging market and drugs going
off-patent in the next five years, generic drug manufacturers will emerge as a
major segment driving demand for pharma packaging. To conclude, Indian pharma
packaging industry has come a long way and is due for more growth. The
tremendous rise in health awareness amongst people will continue to create more
demand for hygienic, tamper resistant and use-and-throw packaging in the
future.
